With little attention to this poet’s seven-character-regulated poems, many people only consider his seven-character quatrains to be most appealing. In fact, aside from the characteristics of showing bold, unconstrained and grandly beautiful, his poems also feature twists and severity. “Bold,” “unconstrained,” “grandly beautiful,” “twists” and “severity” are vague terms for readers to exactly know Dumu’s real poetic style. Therefore, the attempt of this study is to render a concrete and understandable interpretation of Dumu’s poetic style in terms of his seven-character quatrains. To obtain this attempt, eighty-eight seven-character quatrains among Dumu’s poems are selected for analysis with a special focus on “phonology” and “words and phrases.” This essay is composed of six chapters. The first chapter is “Preface,” which is divided into three sections: “Research Motive,” “Research Range” and “Research Method.” The second chapter is “General Introduction of Linguistic Styles,” in which “Development of Linguistic Style Study,” “Definition of Linguistic Style Study” and “Function of Linguistic Style Study” are addressed in detail. The third chapter is “Background of Late Tang Poems and Dumu’s Poetic Mind.” In this chapter, the background of the late Tang Dynasty is firstly introduced, then some poets of this period, and finally “Dumu’s Poetic Mind.” In the fourth chapter, “The Phonetic Style of Dumu’s Seven Character Quatrains” is discussed. Seven sections are included in this chapter. They are: “Use of Alliteration,” “Phonetic Effect of End Rhymes,” “Use of Primary Vowels,” “Application of Prevocalic Glides,” “Variety of Ping-Ze (Level-Qblique) Combinations,” “Reiterative Locution,” and “Conclusion of Chapter 4.” In the fifth chapter, “The Linguistic Style of Dumu’s Seven Character Quatrains” is expounded. Seven sections constitute this chapter, including “Colorful Words and Phrases,” “Number Phrases,” “Application of Allusions,” “Reiterative,” “Splendid Phrases,” “Reiterative of Nouns,” and “Conclusion of Chapter 5.” The last chapter is “Conclusion” of this essay, which is displayed in three sections, including: “Emotional Phonemes,” “Versatile Words & Phrases” and “Value of Dumu’s Seven-character Quatrains.” 葉鍵得 2004 學位論文 ; thesis 405 zh-TW
