In this thesis, we propose error-resilient techniques for SPIHT-coded images transmitted over packet-loss channels. The SPIHT (set partition in hierarchical trees) coding is a very efficient wavelet-based algorithm for still images. The proposed method combines the techniques of packetization, multiple description coding, and error concealment. Each of the wavelet trees having multiple descriptions of the key information is independently packed and transmitted. The key information includes the approximation-subband coefficients and the signs of the largest-scale detail-subband coefficients. The magnitude of the lost largest-scale detail subband is concealed by linear prediction from the parent or sibling coefficients. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves good performance for error resilience with minimal additional redundancy.
