Description
Summary:碩士 === 東海大學 === 建築學系 === 92 === While the globalization influence comes into Taichung city, the Migrant Labors appear in the central area of Taichung, as international wanders. Every weekend, they come into Taihcung city and treat their holidays as carnivals, which changes urban landscape of Taichung central area intensely. How could Taichung city, the third largest city of Taiwan, confront all these changes? The central area of Taichung occurs an ethnic segregation due to the accession of Migrant Laborers, and cut the urban space into pieces because of the implant of foreign culture. How can we connect Taichung city and this unlinked context of urban culture and space? How should Taichung city seat itself? We should receive these changes joyfully or resist these inwardly? Migrant Labors, treated as the city diver, numerously came into the city yet live invisibly. Through various descriptions of the weekend activities of these Migrant Labors, we can recognize their lifestyle in the city. Migrant Labors appears in the specific point of time and space, and dissimilate urban space. This has become a kind of critical space which accrues from the ethnic contact and culture collision. The critical balance of the space existing in the delicate relationship between public and private, or between oneself and others. The critical space can be discussed in three aspects as following: 1.The critical point of available and unavailable─the enchased foreign culture. Migrant Labors seem to be a kind of urban nomad. Their culture embraced in the city without a stable territory, and its domain tides up and down between weekday and weekend. This foreign ethnic crowd toward the remnants space in the city. How could this nomadic ethnic utilize these public spaces? On the other hand, what kind of space is reserved for them in the city? 2.The critical line of public and private─the tensile public space When Migrant Labors starts the competition for space by gathering and picnicking in the lobby of Taipei Main Station, the fine line between local and foreign has been questioned. Urban ethnic minority needs to occupy public space at a specific time. The minority and the urban space furthermore identify each other. 3.The critical face of foreign and local culture─the re-territorization of urban space Migrant Labors pollinate varies foreign culture to Taiwan from their countries thousands kilometer away. The culture of Migrant Labors has rooted in the city and then evolved to a brand-new culture. While the culture is being evolved, so is the space. It appears to be a repeat of urban culture and space. Migrant Labors are considered a catalyst to rebuild space to achieve the goal of the reuse of urban remnant space, to create a friendly urban space and to establish an interface of culture. The space for all the citizens is therefore being rebuilt through rebuilding it for the Migrant Labors.
