It is difficult to apply traditional control charts efficiently and effectively in such environments, and it is not necessary to plot a control chart for each individual part.
In modern manufacturing systems, such as short run productions, low volume manufacturing and job shop manufacturing, small batches of multiple part types are manufactured on the same production processes. However, traditional Shewhart control charts and Exponentially Weighted Moving-Average control charts(EWMA)were designed for mass productions. Therefore, the performances of Shewhart and EWMA control charts for monitoring process shifts in modern manufacturing environments are studied. In this study, we compare two different schemes of control charts for monitoring process shifts in modern manufacturing environments. We use analytical results of Average Run Length(ARL)values as performance criteria to provide optimal design. Based on the results, quality engineers can implement various control chart schemes to monitor process shifts for modern manufacturing systems.A decision support systems software prototype was developed to tackle the problems of implementing quality control in modern manufacturing systems.
