Because of the prevail use of credit card by years and the strong promotion of issue banks, the credit card market get thriving well. Given the contemporary credit card business added, we use DEA and Malmquist productivity index to examine the issue that if operating performances of banks get better. Basing on the data of thirty issuers in Taiwan for the period from 1998 to 2002, we make a research to investigate how deposit & loans activities, credit card business, credit amount, No. of card outstand and total amount-cash advance affect operating performance. Our results present as follows: (1)Credit card business is vital output. It means strong promotion of credit card will get better operating performance. (2)Efficiency scores do not change with time. The values of technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency display up and then down and, in the long run, which does not definitely increase or decrease whatever factors we discuss. (3)Most of banks have not reached optimal scale. Banks could still expend their business, ex universal banking. (4)Credit card business gets rise in Malmquist productivity index. The banks that focus on derivative financial products are more productive than that focus on Traditional Activities. (5)Credit card market share is vital factor of affecting performance. According to sensitivity Analysis, we show that credit card efficiency value will be very changeable upon large credit card market share and, on the other hand, will almost be changeless upon smaller credit card market share.
