Chinese Culture University Instructing: Dr. Kuen-cherng Shue. Dr. Meei-Er Ueng Master Candidate: Ai-mei Wu Summary Camill Pissarro (1830-1903), a famous impressionism pioneer in the nineteenth century, who painted in genre style. His style was called simple and naive by some, but always honest. His was devoted to artistic truth and his fellow men. His works reflect the taste of plain, reality and gentleness. He was a painter talented to grasp at instant perspectives and to display the beauty of nature. Pissarro devoted himself to portraying the ordinary life and surroundings which evinced true and natural feelings of his inner world. His painting style deeply affected the artists of his Age. Known as the "patriarch of French Impressionism," Pissarro was a moral and artistic role model to many of the famous French Impressionists, including Claude Monet(1840-1926), and Alfred Sisley(1839-1899). Pissarro became close friends with Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, who were seeking alternatives to the established methods of painting. He was the patriarch and teacher of the movement, constantly advising younger artists, introducing them to one another, and encouraging them to join the revolutionary trend that he helped to originate. In 1874, they held their own exhibition, a show of "independent" artists, which included the work of Pissarro, Monet, Renoir, Sisley, Edgar Degas and Berthe Morisot. This was the first Impressionist exhibition. Pissarro had a particularly strong influence on Paul Cézanne(1836-1906) and Paul Gauguin(1848-1903) who regarded him as a Master. I enjoy in appreciating Pissarro’s painting concepts and his unique fashion. His masterpieces reflected the natural beauty that was similar to what was called “virtue” in the Confucianism and in the Taoism. Both the Confucianism and the Taoism laid stress on “harmony”, they believed that “beauty is the natural reflection of true life”. I am deeply affected by the “true beauty” in Pissarro’s masterwork. By studying Pissarro’s artistic concepts and painting style, I am looking forward to assimilating his successful experience in order to avail myself of my creations; furthermore, making a breakthrough in my painting skills and showing the spirit and vitality of my works to the utmost.
