The application of rapid prototyping(RP) and rapid tooling(RT) technology on product prototype and machining process is discussed. The design of product prototype and blanks for forging produced by OBJET can be verifier. Also the vacuum casting technology is employed to duplicate several parts of OBJET casted prototype. The duplicated parts were used to access the machining process and to be referred in the tool design. These duplicated parts were machined in order to simulated the manufacturing processes and to verify the tool design. That is any problem during machining processes and tool design can be detected in advance. For this reason any mistake in the physical machining processes can be avoided. T he machining cost can be reduced because of reduction of wrong tool or process design. In the meantime the machining procedure can be reduced and confirmed becaused the machining processes had been already simulated before real machining. The research procesure describe as follow. First , the CAD model of this gear was established using SOLIDWORKS 2003. Second, several parts based on th OBJET prototype were duplicated by the vacuum casting. In the meantime all the necessary tools can be made. Last, the machining processes was simulated. As the result, the lead time can be reduced .
