Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺灣科技大學 === 機械工程系 === 92 === High rate of rollover accidents on high-body touring buses (or coaches) has been persisting in Taiwan over the past years. These phenomena cause not only property damages but also result in fatalities and severe injuries to passengers. The reasons for the rollover are because these buses were built to unreasonably high and with passenger seats distributed on top deck. Thus, when such buses make turns at high speeds or exercise emergency dodging maneuvering, they are prone to overturn quite easily.
After thorough analyses on the rollover behaviors of this kind of buses, we strongly recommended that the current inspection standard on the maximum allowable tilting angle should be increased or buses should be tested when fully-loaded. This would lower down the heights of these high-body buses and result in an immediate reduction of rollover accidents.
This study analyzed the causes and remedies of rollover on these buses. Through the derivation and solution of equations of motion, we found several feasible ways to increase the rollover threshold of these vehicles. These methods include lowering center of gravity of the vehicle, overlapping the roll center with the sprung mass center, tuning the roll frequency on suspension, and possibly using magneto-rheological fluid control devices on the suspension.
