Polar Fourier Transform (PFT) analysis is applied to shadings image of a part to get its Generic Fourier Descriptor (GFD) indexes; feature recognition is applied for a part to get its manufacturing features. Using GFD index and feature information, it is possible to define the similarity of two parts. This approach can be applied to PDM systems for searching parts with certain shape and feature, and processed the automatic version control by analysis the shape and feature difference of different version parts.
