Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺灣大學 === 國際企業學研究所 === 92 === Technological innovations inevitably have various effects on every firm in the industry. Some firms that possess key skills will strive well and become key players in the industry. While some other firms do not respond well and will gradually lose their competitive edge and drift to become insignificant players. The primary purpose of this research is to assess the impact of 3G services on the mobile telecom industry in order to derive strategy implications for mobile telecom operators. The ultimate goal is to, based on the analyses of the migration of mobile telecom industry against mobile data service, aid strategy formulation for operators in the industry. By using industry analysis models e.g. Five Forces Model、Mutimedia Industry Segmentation Framework and Co-opetition theory, this research analyzes the mobile telecom industry of Japanese NTT DoCoMo and major mobile telecom players in Taiwan. After analyzing the impact of the launch of i-mode and GPRS on the operators, this research concludes that six important factors should be considered when evaluating the impact of technology innovation on industry environment, including the sources of innovation, the maturity of innovated technologies, current technologies adopted by the firm, the industry position of the firm, the complementary resources controlled by the firm, and the speed-to-the-market of corresponding business model to market demand. Based on these six factors, this research concludes that the (i) the change of value proposition, (ii) the loose of original control mechanisms, (iii) the impacts of standardization, and (iv) the request for rapid respond to market, should not be neglected when mobile data service gradually prevails. Based on our conclusions, future research can concentrate on the development of the competitive arena and competitive strategies for mobile data services.
