Basing on The Investigation of Children’s Reading Interests in Taitung (written by Lin Wen-Pao, 2000) , this research investigates the students in 10 elementary school which represent 5 living areas. The five areas are Taitung area, Kuanshan area, Chengkung area, Tawu area and Island area. Hope the research can help to understand the children’s leisure activities, reading condition, reading favors and the medias in their homes. The investigation provides the overall information of senior primary students’ reading interests in Taitung county. It can help schools to plan their reading movement and also provide some opinions when choosing resources. Besides, we hope by starting from parents and teachers, the children in Taitung can transfer from plying video games to reading books. The result of this study is in the following: 1. Senior elementary students’ leisure reading motivation and attitude in Taitung county (a) Students have enough leisure time, but they choose to play games and chat the most instead of reading books. (b) Students have good reading motivation. They need adults‘ help in reading materials. 2. Senior elementary students’ leisure reading condition in Taitung county (a) The major sources of leisure reading is from school; the second is from the family. (b) Most students read alone, some with fellow students. (c) The major motivation of reading is for receation; education is the next. 3. Senior elementary students’ leisure reading interests in Taitung county (a) Students read the books of words the most. (b) The genre which students like the most is jokes of non-literature. The genre which students dislike the most is prose. (c) The creative sources that students likes the most is from translation; the native creative is the next. 4. Senior elementary students’ leisure reading environment in Taitung (a) The major audio media which students have is the television. (b) It’s not common that students family order magazines, and they can only provide few reading materials. (c) Computer and wednet will decrease the distance between city and country, and will also help to increase students’ interests in reading. Moreover, this research provides some suggestions to students, parents, schoolteachers, school administrations, education authorities, and children reading publishers. Hope it can stimulate students’ reading interests, build good reading habits and environment, and form the learning family; most of all, to promote citizens quality.
