碩士 === 國立臺東大學 === 兒童文學研究所 === 92 === There’s a Kingdom of monsters in the world of picture storybooks. In this place, monsters are a little different from we used to thought of. There aren’t only scared、wicked、strange and haircurling sides of monsters, but also other ones . Other sides？It seems hard to imagine. However, after abandoning prejudices , you’ll find that monsters are different from your “should be”. Maybe for fun、space of creation、distance keeping、or the novelty out of overthrowing monsters’ traditional stereotyped images, the authors of picture storybooks endue monsters with new images without limit. Some images are bran-new, some are recreated and overturn to the former imaginations. In fact, monster is everything goes. On account of monsters are “strange objects”, they are supposed to be strange to match their names. This thesis consists of five chapters. In Chapter One, the researcher tries to search for the kinds of monsters’ images in the river of history; to probe their stereotyped images and functions, in order to be the background and the foundation of the following discussions. Next, according to the former patterns, the researcher intends to mould new ones of monsters. By observing outward appearances and inward personalities of the monsters in picture storybooks, the researcher sums up the accordance and disaccord, and distinguish the sameness and difference of monsters. Not only the exterior, also had we listened to the overtone from the monsters in picture storybooks. We do our effort to research the reasons for their going on stage and the implicit meanings behind their strange appearances. Since monsters are not just monsters, their existence must have the unique purpose and position. It’s not merely their variability and interest to make readers fascinated and attracted, but the uses on mentality. Monsters picture storybooks have not only the power of stories, but also the power of monsters. Between “supposition” and “confirmation”, we discover other sides of monsters. It confirms that monsters obey no rules, and they do whatever we wish.
