Abstract
This research is partly based upon an interview with Ms. Pe-yu Deng, and is about her life and some happy memories of her career during 1968 to 1985. It is also based upon some of her publications, news reports, her manuscripts, memos, programs pamphlets and the memory of her program volunteers of Big Brother And Big Sister. With a format of story-telling, this research intends to reconstruct the collective memories and pass on the feeling and meaning of her times.
Ms. Deng worked with Reverend Shie Dai Tan from the “Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary” in 1968 to 1985. Together they founded The Happy Children Center and promoted many creative activities. They are the pioneers in the field of children services. Their services have impacts on many children, big and little. Their contributions to the social works of that period were deep and far.
Ms. Deng’s personal growth and experiences in those years were the sources of her thoughts and forces when facing the challenges and crossroads of her life afterward. From her philosophy of work to the principles, which are creative, practical and artful, of the activities, are the keys to the success of The Happy Children Center. We can find the origin of the early children theaters in Taiwan from many of the programs that Ms. Deng initiated.
The sprouting of the children’s theaters and the development of many groups of children’s services in Taiwan mostly were the works of those volunteers who were trained at The Happy Children Center. The program of The Big Brother and Big Sister were proved to be the first of its kind. The bonding between those big brothers and big sisters is an everlasting force. Until now, they are still passing on the happy spirit of service, devotion, growth and learning.
