Since its practice in the 90th academic year, Grade 1-9 Curriculum has introduced another stage of curriculum reform. Under the trend of combining individual subjects into learning areas, health and physical education were combined as “Health and Physical Education Learning Area”. The researcher attempted to understand the effectiveness of this learning area through students’ learning satisfaction. Hence, the primary goals of this research were to study the Penghu County elementary school students’ learning satisfaction towards “Health and Physical education Learning Area”, compare how students with different background differ in terms of their satisfaction towards this learning area, and what could be done to upgrade students learning satisfaction. The “Health and Physical Education Area Satisfaction Questionnaire” designed by the researcher was used to survey all elementary school fifth-graders in Penghu County. A total number of 940 questionnaires were sent out and 897 responded. The returned rate for this study was 95%. Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA were computed using the software SPSS10.0 for data analysis. The results indicated that (a) elementary school students’ learning satisfaction and effect of Health and Physical Education Area were moderately high in Penghu County; (b) learning effect had the highest satisfaction, followed by peer relationship, teacher instruction, learning environment, teaching material and school administration; (c) no significant difference was found on students’ learning satisfaction between two genders; (d) schools with 13 classes or more showed greater satisfaction compared with those with less than 12classes; (e) teaching each subjects separately had higher satisfaction than teaching as a combined area; (f) ways to improve satisfaction included adopting team competition, purchasing more equipment, offering sufficient classes, and providing a variety of curriculum. These were ranked top of the four aspects of teacher instruction, learning environment, school administration and teaching material respectively. The results of this research could be used as reference for the instruction of Health and Physical Education Area, with the hope to upgrade students’ learning satisfaction and improve the effectiveness of this learning area, and achieve the ultimate goal of the well-being of the students.
