Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺灣師範大學 === 國文研究所 === 92 === ABSTRACT This thesis studies the phonological history of Cantonese based on the data of Lagarrue’s Elments de Langue Chinoise Dialecte Cantonais-Notation Quoc Ngư), A l’usage des Officiers, Fonctionnaires et Colons(1900). Lagarrue’s work is a Cantonese textbook in French, with no Chinese annotation, and with the Cantonese pronunciation being indicated using Vietnamese Romanization(Quoc Ngư)), French interpretation, and Vietnamese translation, making it very different from other missionary systems. To perform the comparative work, all the Cantonese pronunciations were first transliterated into Chinese characters based on both French and Vietnamese interpretations and the phonological correspondence of the Vietnamese Romanization. Data in Dictionnaire Francais-Cantonnais (1909) and modern Yue dialect(粵方言)were also double checked with the reconstruction. A phonological distribution table(聲韻調配合表) was constructed. About 1250 Chinese characters were successfully transliterated out of 1550 Cantonese pronunciations extracted from the book. Two comparative researches were performed, one with Middle Chinese, and the other with modern Yue dialect. The phonological evolutions from Middle Chinese(7 th century) to the end of the 19th century and the sound changes during the past 100 years were traced. Synchronic observations were also discussed based on comparison with Lagarrue’s work and contemporary missionary works. Lagarrue’s work on Cantonese pronunciations reflected significant variations owing to the interaction of Vietnamese Romanization and the phonological systems of French and Yue dialect. These variations are very important because they were not recorded by other missionary works. For example, there were free variations of 〔i〕 and 〔e〕,〔u〕 and 〔o〕, only one set of affricate initials, the yin-ping tone with high pitch, and the vowel 〔o〕 has changed into〔a〕. These phenomena suggest that many sound changes in modern Cantonese have existed since very early times. Moreover, the way that Lagarrue pronounced -y -ei and -œy as -i, and -ou as -u, also verifies previous assumptions by other scholars. According to the place names used in the book, it appears that Lagarrue wrote it in Hai-Ninh, located on the border between the southwest Guangdong and the northeast Vietnam. While the phonological system reflected in this book is close to Yuehai pian(粵海片), it also contains with some characteristics of the southern delta areas like Zhongshan(中山) and Qinlian(欽廉). Interestingly, these two results from different perspectives can be closely related to a single conclusion. Moreover, a phonological distribution table(聲韻調配合表), a homophone character table(同音字表), and an index of all the transliterated Chinese characters were created as appendices.
