By integrating ergonomics principles and concepts of product design, a new pattern of screwdriver handle was developed and evaluated. It considers not only comfort of use but also efficiency and functionality. This study consists of three experiments. Experiment 1 evaluates the effects of handle shape (octagon, acute angle hexagon, round angle hexagon, pistol or round triangle) and gloves (cotton glove, anti-static glove or barehanded). The results revealed that screwdrivers with triangle shaped handle could help subjects produce the maximum torque. Besides, using screwdrivers with hexagon shaped handle spent the least time, generated the minimum biceps muscle activity, and bad the least subjective fatigue rating. Moreover, wearing an anti-static glove or being barehanded can produced the maximum torque and spent the least time as well. Experiment 2 evaluates the handle diameter of screwdriver (30 mm, 34 mm or 38 mm) and operation plan (vertical or horizontal). The results showed that the torque increased with the increase of the radius, the operation time and the brachioradialis muscle activity also increased with the increase of the radius. In addition, subjects produced greater torque and spent less time when working on the vertical operation plan. Based on the findings of experiment 1 and 2, a new pattern of handle was thus developed. The ratio of diameters of feature points was 0.567:0.958:1:0.738, with the ratio of distances between two neighboring feature points of 0.421:1:0.662:0.445:0.421. The shape is the combination of hexagon, circular, hexagon, triangle, hexagon and circular, shape from top down. The handle is rubber-textured and with the total length of 110mm. In experiment 3, we compared the new pattern of screwdriver handle with the others. The results indicated that the new one had the advantage in torque performance, operation time and subjective fatigue rating. The new prototype screwdriver was perceived to be better in usability and functionality. 王茂駿 2004 學位論文 ; thesis 137 zh-TW
