The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of far-infrared rays on insomnia patients with depressive symptom. The quasi-experimental research was designed in this study. Totally 70 subjects were obtained from a district teaching hospital in Taipei areas. The subjects were insomnia patients with depressive symptom, using convenience sampling and nonrandomized assigned to experimental group or control group.
The experimental group provides the far-infrared rays (FIR) on specific acupuncture point to measure, twice a week, each time 15 minutes, continuously altogether eight times. Both of the experimental and control groups must assess by detect for serotonin and Malondialdehyde (MDA) level of serum and self-writing with Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS).
Data were managed using SPSS 10.0 for Windows and analysed using t-test, pearson correlation and Chi-square test for demographics data to compared the differences between these two groups before and after implementing the intervention of far-infrared rays.
Our results showed that the data of serum serotonin (p<0.01), MDA (p≦0.001) and AIS (p<0.001) have significant difference in the experimental group. However, control group was no significant difference. In conclusion, Far-infrared rays can not only provide patients insomnia with depressive symptom to improve their sleep quality but also it can develop for other disease with insomnia.
