Abstract
The purpose of this research is to study the relationships between organizational structure and organizational effectiveness in public museums.
The research uses the questionnaire survey method to investigate the public museums in Taiwan. The survey instruments are called「museum organizational structure」、「museum management model」 and 「museum organizational effectiveness」. There are 686 usable responses with 90.38% acceptable samples from the survey of the museums by the Chinese Association of Museum, R.O.C. The hypotheses are tested using person correlation, t-test, one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression.
This research has the following conclusions:
1.Most public museums show high degree in the four organizational structure straits, layer responsibility model, specialized labor division, autonomy and information connection.
2. Basically the four organizational structure straits directly affect perception of organizational effectiveness.
3.Three different models, bureaucratic model, collegial model and political model coexist in most public museums, but the bureaucratic model is commonly used.
4.The museum staffs prefer the political model.
5. Some personal backgrounds, for example gender, position, working experience, etc, will affect staffs’ perception of organizational effectiveness as organizational structure.
6.The relation between organizational structure and organizational effectiveness will be easily predicted by information connection.
7.The environments of museums, such as the location, personal numbers, and the history will influence will affect staffs’ perception of organizational effectiveness.
8.Museums usually stress on layer responsibility model but neglect information connection.
9.Three kinds of management models affect organizational effectiveness,but the political model is the most one.
10. Personnel factors should be the key point to organizational effectiveness in museum.
11.There is some room for promoting the organizational effectiveness in all museum.
In addition, the suggestions based on the conclusion will be offered to the educational administrative authority, museum administrative operation, and the future study.
