This study is about Jihei Nakamura’s work on Taiwan.Jihei Nakamura entered The Taipei High School run by Japanese Governor-general of Taiwan in the 15 th year of Taisho (1926) and graduated in the fifth year of Showa (1930). Even after he returned home to Japan, his longing for the South did not cease. Eight years after he had come home, he published “The Seed of the Tropical Willow” and was recognized by Haruo Sato. He published many novels concerning to Taiwan after that and set foot in Taiwan again in the 14 th year of Showa (1939) in order to collect materials for his new novels. He wrote in the postscript of his “The Collection of Novels on Taiwan” which was published in the 16 th year of Showa (1941).
My nostalgia to the South, my longing for the South and my love to the South will never change all through my life.
It goes without saying that “the South” here means “Taiwan.” However, how was his life in Taiwan actually? How was Taiwan reflected on his eyes? Why did he love Taiwan so much? These are questions I wanted to discuss in this thesis. I discussed these through focusing his “longing for the South.”
In the Chapter 1, I talked on my motivation of this study and the scope of it. In the chapter 2, I tried to clarify the starting point of his longing for the South and the beginning of his activity as a novelist. I also traced the actual course of his trip in Taiwan. In the chapter 3, I discussed on his novels concerning to Taiwan; how his longing for Taiwan was reflected in his literature. In the chapter 4, I rethought about the origin of his longing for the South based on the discussion in the previous two chapters.
At first, he came to Taiwan because of his very personal interest in Taiwan. But his aptitude for literature was cultivated through his life in Taiwan and, at the same time, his anxiety and his agony were healed. He discovered he beauty of Taiwan in its primitive nature and the naïve hearts of the people, especially native people, living on this island. Through this study, I could understand not only about Jihei Nakamura but also the beauty of Taiwan.
Key word: Longing for the south, Journey to Taiwan, Aborigine, Fable.
