This study is based on the McClusky’s Theory of Margin to explore the relation between the adult adaptation to living and adult learning. Students in the Miaoli Community University were used as the subjects. "Margin in Life Scale"(MILS) was utilized to carry out the inquisition and analysis.
The Margin in Life Scale is consisted of six phases of questions. They are "physiology health"," ego concept"," human interaction"," family relation"," religion and mind" and" working environment". The research investigated 505 students that enrolled the session of spring 2004 Miaoli Community University. The subjects were randomly stratified to fill out the Margin in Life Scale .
Data obtained in this study was analyzed by descriptive and inferential measurements as t-test, ANOVA, and Scheffé to examine the hypothesis.
The study came to the following conclusions:
1.The value of the whole living margin of students of the Miaoli Community University was .8987, which showed that their life load was too low and they had not explored their potential in living.
2.The McClusky’s Theory of Margin could be applied in research studies of adult learning.
3.Female participants’ margin values in" physiology health"," ego concept"," family relation" were significantly lower than male at p<.05.
4.It was valuable to take McClusky’s Theory of Margin as the foundation to develop the basal evaluation tool.
Whether the adult participates continue to learn or not could not be predicted by one single factor. Rather, it involved multiple factors in different phases.
Based on the results and findings of this research, some suggestions were offered to the community university curriculum designers, teachers, students and future research direction.
