Now Mainland China is not only ranked as one of the leading economies in the world, but also maintains a superiority in the cross-strait wrestle. Before the opening policy adopted, Mainland China engaged itself in a Catching-up strategy with the main emphasis upon speed. After the reform, the strategy has been transferred to the Comparative advantage strategy, focusing on the development of labor-concentrated industries, export-oriented industries, etc, and has got a great achievement. In the analysis of the upcoming economic development of Mainland China, this article points out 4 preferable conditions for future development (low labor cost and large markets, high savings, the significant advantage of subsequent development and a large land mass) and 6 innate weaknesses due to poor mismanagement (population growth, difficulties in 3 relevant agriculture fields, a big wealth gap, a binary economic structure, deteriorated environmental conditions and unorganized industry). The future trend for its economic development must strengthen the Comparative Advantage strategy and require open, consistent and stable development. As the article deduces, Mainland China will reach its goals in the 3-step plan and new 3-step plan, and become more interdependent with the Asia-Pacific and global environment. However, though such a development is conducive to worldwide peace, it intensifies the cross-straits confrontation with an increasing gap in ROC’s national power. In addition, the influence of America will increase at first, but subsequently decrease with the rise of Mainland China. In view of this, Taiwan shall never depend upon USA too much. In regards to the economy, the cross-strait cooperation will favor both sides in a complimentary way. The trading relationship will be a security valve for both governments. The closer their economic relationship keeps, the more secure Taiwan will be. So the imminent task of the ROC is to spare no effort to develop its economy. It cannot back away from its main priority of economic development under any circumstances, because national power and security are both based upon its economy. 碩士 === 國防管理學院 === 國防決策科學研究所 === 92 === Since Mainland China started economic reforms, they have concentrated their efforts into economic development and have reached a significant growth in economic and national power.
