In previous study, we have cloned a trimucrin cDNA from a cDNA library of the venomous gland of Taiwan habu and demonstrated that the recombinant disintegrin expressed in E. coli showing anti-platelet aggregation and anti-angiogenesis activities. These activities indicated that the trimucrin might be further explored further as a target for the development of anti-cancer and anti-metastatic agents. Interestingly, trimucrin was demonstrated with body weight reduction in a preliminary study in rats. Therefore, we are very anxious to know whether trimucin could regulate adiposity. Adipose tissue consists of mature adipocytes and endothelial cells. It is highly vascularized and has angiogenic properties. In this study, trimucrin protein with biological functions was successful expressed in Pichia pastoris. In the body weight reduction assay, our results demonstrated that trimucrin reduced body mass of Sprague-Dawley rats. Different body weight groups response to trimucrin differently, the obeser rats lost more weight than lean ones did.
