The purpose of this project is to experimentally determine the deformation behavior and fracture mechanism of an aluminum honeycomb sandwich structure under uniaxial compressive loading. The effect of environment on the degradation of this honeycomb structure has also been examined. The mechanical behavior of this material was evaluated using optical microscopy and SEM.
The compressive loading was applied to honeycomb structure at all directions, including parallel (X3 direction) to and transverse (X1 or X2 direction) to honeycomb cell. The load versus deformation in X3 direction shows a greatest elastic stage before its yielding (18.66MN) in comparing to X1 or X2 direction. After that point, the load remains at a plateau stage where material was deformed plastically. Finally, it was compacted and densified. The yielding point of X1 direction is approximately 5.21 MN. The yielding point of X2 direction is approximately 2.60 MN. The compressive strength of X1 direction was double more then X2 direction.
The compressive strength of honeycomb material showed appreciable degradation from 13.96 MN to 8.64 MN as the salt concentration in solution increased from 5 g/l to 15 g/l, however, this honeycomb material did not found any deterioration in tap water up to 720 hours. The compressive strength maintained 13.11 MN.
