The purpose of this study is to explore the commerce senior high school students’ misconceptions for the “market equilibrium and price mechanism” of economics.
A semi-opened paper-pencil test and a semi-structured interview were adopted to collect students’ misconceptions, and the result was used to develop students’ two-tier diagnostic assessment instrument on “market equilibrium and price mechanism” concepts. In this study, 81 first grade students are tested for the semi-opened test, and 9 of those who have more misconceptions are chosen for the semi-structured interview. Moreover, there are 30 students tested for the two-tier diagnostic assessment instrument on “market equilibrium and price mechanism,” with high reliability and validity.
The main misconceptions revealed by this study are as follows:
1. Cannot understand what economics dealing is and the proper nouns of economics.
2. Cannot understand the process of negotiated price.
3. Cannot understand the variance of supply and demand.
4. Cannot understand the meaning of market equilibrium.
Based on these findings, various implications are suggested.
