Abstract
The purpose of this research is to investigate the job characteristics, the work values and the job satisfaction of civil servants in Taichung City Government, and to explore the relationship between them.
This research used structured questionnaier to investigate civil servants in Taichung City Government by stratified random sampling, then
distributed 750 questionnaires, and returned 467of them that were effective
samples. These data were analyzed by descriptive statistic, t-test, one-wayANOVA, Pearson product moment correlation and stepwise multiple
regression. The results of this research show as follows:
1. For civil servants in Taichung City Government, the level of the job
characteristics is moderate, the work values is good, the job satisfaction is fair.
2. For overall, individual background as qualification, rank and duty havesignificant difference on the job characteristics, individual background as age, education, service category and tenure have significant difference on the job satisfaction, individual background has non significant difference on the work values.
For dimension, individual background as sex, education, qualification, rank, service category and duty have significant difference on the “skill
variety”, “identity-significance” and “autonomy-feedback” dimensions
of the job characteristics, individual background as education,
qualification, rank and duty have significant difference on the “terminal values” section, the “self-growth”, “self-actualization”, “esteem” and“leisure, health with convenient traffic” dimentions of the work values,
individual background as age, marriage, education, qualification, servicecategory and tenure have significant difference on the “intrinsicsatisfaction”, “extrinsic satisfaction” and “general satisfaction”
dimensions of the job satisfaction.
3. For overall, the job characteristics is significantly positive correlated to the job satisfaction, the work values is significantly positive correlated
to the job satisfaction, too. Simultaneously, the correlation coefficient of
the job characteristics which is larger than the work values.
For dimension, the “identity-significance” and “autonomy-feedback”dimensions of the job characteristics which are significantly positive
correlated to the job satisfaction, the “terminal values” and “instrumentalvalues” sections, the “self-growth”, “self-actualization”, “esteem”,
“social-interaction” and “organizational safety with economic reward”
dimentions of the work values which are significantly positive correlatedto the job satisfaction.
4.The “autonomy-feedback” of the job characteristics, and the “esteem” ofthe work values are significant predictors of the “intrinsic satisfaction”.
The “autonomy-feedback” of the job characteristics, and the “social-
interaction” of the work values are significant predictors of the “extrinsicsatisfaction”. The “autonomy-feedback” of the job characteristics, and the“esteem”, “social-interaction” of the work values are significant predictorsof the “general satisfaction”. The above predictable performance are
between 10.8% and 22.8%.
Based on the above results, this research recommends some suggestions
to administration, supervisor and civil servants.
