ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate the local dialectics teachers’ cognitive attitudes and present circumstances in teaching, as well as to explore the problems and obstacles caused by the present administrative policies. An archive study was conducted before the questionnaire took its full shape. The research surveyed 167 local dialectics teachers in central Taiwan, with 124 valid questionnaires collected.
The survey adopted SPSS 10.0 Chinese version as the tool to analyze items, factors, credibility, averages, standard differences, percentages, order of importance, and descriptive statistics. Followings are the findings:
I: Generally, surveyed local dialectics teachers have positive attitude towards their teaching career, despite their background variables. Most of the surveyed teachers think their job is very meaningful and they are willing to undertake jobs related to teaching local dialectics.
II: Male teachers are found more satisfied than female teachers with their phonic writing ability and teaching efficiency expectations. However, in regard to real teaching efficiency, female teachers are found more satisfied than male teachers.
III: Surveyed teachers’ willingness to cooperate with the administrative policies and teaching strategies is not differentiated by their background variables. The study found that the longer a teacher served at a certain school, the more satisfied they are with the goodwill of its administrative staff. But more experienced teachers are found less satisfied with the teaching aides they get.
IV: The government is urged to complete drafting policies regarding the recruitment of local dialectics teachers. Equally important is the setup of teacher training channels for qualified teachers to acquire official teaching license.
V:Schools are suggested to implement the following events as a gesture to promote learning local dialectics:
1.Designating one of the weekdays as Dialectics Day
2.Hosting recitation and story-telling contests on a semester basis
3.Hosting rhymes composition contests on a regular basis
4.Hosting problem/puzzle solving contests with prizes for winners
5.Setting up Dialectics Corner created and renewed on a weekly basis
6.Honoring in public exemplary students with outstanding works in local dialectics
7.Publishing dialectics newsletter or special features
