Summary: | 碩士 === 國立成功大學 === 政治經濟學研究所 === 92 === This thesis deals with the issues of power elites and political development. It employs the theories of elitism to explore the main questions about the transition to democracy from authoritarianism in the process of political development in Taiwan.
Political reforms in Taiwan can be divided into three periods: before 1988, 1988-2000 and 2000-2003. The interactions between power elites had deeply affected Taiwan's political and economic development, included national integration ideological legitimacy, political participation and institution-building.
In conclusion, the major factors that affected the political stability during the period of authoritarianism were crisis consciousness of power elites and political consensus for development. On the contrary, national identity and ethnic conflicts now have become the major factors that put Taiwan in a situation of political instability.
