Various pool fire arrangements under different exhaust rates were conducted. Heat release rate was computed with the following four methods. They are (1)oxygen consumption, (2)carbon dioxide generation, (3)gas temperature rise, and (4)mass reduction rate. The mass reduction rate of gasoline in the pool was measured with load cells; this method provided the basis of comparison for the first three methods. It was found in this study that the oxygen consumption method is more accurate than carbon dioxide generation method and is within 10% error in the range of 1~4MW heat release rate. In the process of observation and analysis, the inter-relation among the following factors were recognized. These factors included flame appearance, fire products composition, exhaust rates, heat release rate, funnel-flame distance, and fuel pool arrangements.
