In view of the research documents regarding repairs of wooden structures and damage of wooden beams in Taiwan, we find that damage due to the splits of wooden members was very serious. Among which, damage due to the splits of wooden beams was most common. However, for the selection of construction technique and its materials for traditional wooden beams, we can only depend on limit official regulations on choosing repair materials, but lack of criteria on construction procedures and specifications. Though to repair the splits of wooden beams with epoxy resin is now the most popular way to establish the basic information of epoxy function is essential because present knowledge on epoxy materials is still not adequate for local site application. This paper focuses on the experimental study by using epoxy resin to repair wooden beams of historical buildings. Contents of the study include site investigation, historical review, reason why the splits of wooden beams, and establishment of the damage models, etc. By comparison of theoretical analysis and experimental results, we can evaluate and explore the method of repairing wooden beams of historical buildings with epoxy resin. Then, we can draw down the timing of using epoxy resin, and its correct construction procedures and technical specifications so that the doubt of using epoxy resin on repair of historical buildings can be resolved. From this study, we find using epoxy resins for repairs can enhance the strength of damaged wooden beams. However, various types of epoxy resins obtain unequal results after repaired. By comparing the strength coefficients of cohesion of epoxy resins, emphasis shall be placed on its cohesive strength and its characteristic function. Besides, comparing the strength coefficients of cohesion between the original wooden beams and the damaged after repair, we may conclude that strength of damaged wooden beam after repair shall be less than that of its original. To compensate the lacking strength of damaged wooden beams, it is suggested to consider further studies by combining epoxy resins together with other strengthen materials, such as, to cover the damaged beam by FRP sheets … etc. so that a required strength after repair can be achieved.
