It could cause terrible damages if the driver makes the wrong decision, especially on the high way. A good and safe design helps the driver have proper cognition instantly. According to this, the study for the safety of the rear lights is necessary and important. The purpose of this study is to discuss the driver's cognition reacting to stop light and turn signal of different shapes of rear lights under different situations, and to give suggestions for the safety and references for the car rear lights design in the future through experiments analysis. This study includes two parts: 1.The warning effectiveness for the safety reasons of break light and the driver’s visual recognition and cognition. 2.The indicator effectiveness of turn signal and the driver’s visual recognition and cognition. Through the experiment, the result shows: (1)Under all the different distances, the driver reacts quickest to the triangle-shaped break light, then, the trapezium-shaped, and longest to the rectangular-shaped.The result for the satisfaction of visual recognition in subjective evaluation same as above. (2)The emphasis of turn signal is the arrangement. In three different arranging turn signals of rectangular-shaped break light, the driver has shortest reacting time to the one set on the top. In two different arranging turn signals of trapezium-shaped break light, the driver has the shortest reacting time to the one set on the top as well. In two different arranging turn signals of triangle-shaped break light, the driver has shorter reacting time to the one set in the middle than at the bottom. Above these arrangements of turn signals, the shortest reacting time found in the one set in the middle of the triangle-shaped break light, and the longest showed in the one set at the bottom in rectangular-shaped break light. (3)Female’s reacting time is shorter than male on both stop light and turn signal. Due to nowadays, there are not many studies related to the car rear light design in Taiwan, it is necessary to continue studying and discussing. Hopefully, through this study, there will be more and more people devote themselves to work on this field, and the results can be used as references in the future through the experiment. The purpose of this study is to discuss the driver's cognition reacting to stop light
and turn signal of different shapes of rear lights under different situations, and to give suggestions for the safety and references for the car rear lights design in the future through experiments analysis. This study includes two parts:
