As the compressive axial force exceeds the critical value, the beam/column buckles. Therefore, the reinforcing structures are often applied laterally to prevent the beam/column structures from buckling. In this study, the receptance method was adopted to analyze the elastic buckling characteristics of the combined structures consist of a number of sub-structures and to obtain the approximate solutions. At first, a simply supported beam, which is laterally supported by multiple linear springs and torsional springs, was taken as an example. Investigation was made to understand how those parameters such as the type, the quantity, the location and the stiffness of the spring affect the buckling behavior of the beam. Secondly, a simply supported beam, which was subjected to a compressive axial force and joined to a parallel reinforcing beam at finite locations, was studied to realize how the number and the location of the joint, the stiffness of the reinforcing beam affect the buckling characteristics. Comparing the results obtained by the receptance method to those by the finite element code, ANSYS, it is seen that they agree well. It verifies the validity of the receptance method in analyzing the elastic buckling characteristics of certain combined structures considered in this study.
