The subjects of this study were the drug offenders at Taiwan Taichung Women’s Prison. The questionnaire data were collected from 615 drug offenders, and 393 of them took the oral health examination. The participants were mainly under 30 y/o (68.04%) and had the educational background of secondary school level (51.23%). The prevalence rate of each kind of substance abuse was: cigarette (97.20%), amphetamine (92.97%), heroin (87.01%), betel quid (55.80%), alcohol (44.04%), MDMA (15.80%). Among them, the combine user of betel quid, cigarette, amphetamine and heroin was over 60%. The prevalence rate of caries among the subjects was 97.96%. The mean DMFT index was 10.92 and the filled rate was merely 27.94%, which indicates that nearly 70% of decayed teeth did not receive any treatment yet. The community periodontal index (CPI) showed that 42.24% of the subjects had calculus. The study founds that the related factors of the substance abuse and oral health among the female prisoners included age, kinds and duration of substance abuse as well as habits and behaviors of dental visit. The findings suggest that the prevention of substance abuse and related oral health knowledge should be taught from primary school level. Moreover, oral health care services should be increased and offered to the substance abusers at the prisons in order to re-build their concepts of proper oral heath care as well as enable them to have a healthier life quality in the future.
