Due to advancement in telecommunication and information technologies, traditional road information systems can no longer satisfy public demand. Although government agencies have provided significant funding to improve road information systems, route guidance capabilities are still inadequate.
In light of this, this study first analyzes deficiencies in the current guide signing system on Taiwan’s Provincial Highways, and then reviews domestic as well as international guidelines and references on highway guidance information systems. Integrated deployment of the information system for Provincial Highway 12 is used as the basis for a comparative analysis. The objective is to verify whether systematic integrated planning can help increase traffic speed, decrease travel time, and effectively reduce social costs. Moreover, it is to establish a mechanism to provide real-time information and suggestion to travelers as a part of the overall intelligent transportation system.
