Altered cardiac autonomic function involvement is controversial. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of acupuncture-induced weight loss on cardiac autonomic function. We examined 27 obese women (BMI > 27) and 27 non-obese women (BMI<27) using power spectral analysis of heart rate variability(HRV). On the basis of the noninvasive technique, the 5-min mean R-R interval(mean RR ),variance of R-R interval(Ln Var), very-low-frequency power(Ln VLF),low-frequency power(Ln LF), high-frequency power(Ln HF), total power (Ln TP), low-frequency power in normalized unit (LF%) and ratio of LF to HF (Ln LF/HF) were analysed. We compared the changes of clinical characteristics and HRV in each group and between groups after acupuncture. Our study demonstrated that both groups had no significant difference of age and power spectral analysis of HRV before the acupuncture treatment. In four-week observations, we found that acupuncture decreased the body weight, body mass index, body fat percentage, waist circumference, hip circumference, and waist/hip ratio in all cases. The both groups demonstrated a significantly increased HF and decreased LF% and LF/HF after acupuncture. There seems no significant difference of changes of HRV after acupuncture between both groups. We conclude that acupuncture may induced weight loss effect, increased vagal and reduced sympathetic modulations of heart rate. But the relationship between these findings need further investigation.
