Abstract
The main purpose of study is to explore implement elementary school principal-selecting system effects principal’s leadership style and the atmosphere in an elementary school .
The entire study can be divided into three phrases: In the first phase, attention is placed not only on investigating the fundamental theories about school principal-selecting systems, leadership style and school atmosphere-creating, but also on analyzing several empirical research reports about the same topics. In the second phase: the efforts are put on the followings: finding out the current status and the variation of principal’s leadership style、school atmosphere-creating, along with comparing the changes and examining the correlations between the leadership and atmosphere before and after the implementation of the principal-selecting system. In the third phase: conclusions are drawn and suggestions are made from the results of the study for considerations.
The approach adopted for this study is the Questionnaire-method with stratified sampling randomly. Based on the results from studied reports and recommendations from experts in this field, an analyzing tool with high reliability has been developed, titled ' A questionnaire for exploring the influences of existing principal-selecting system on the principle’s leadership style and the atmosphere in an elementary school.’ A total of 1045 teachers from 103 elementary schools has responded the questionnaire, in a population of 504 public elementary schools in central Taiwan area. Of them, 889 valid copies, approximately 85.07%, are collected. Data was analyzed with computers by traditional or state-of- the-art statistic method, such as Arithmetic Mean, Standard Deviation, T-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson Product-moment.
Main findings obtained from the study are as follows:
1.Principals’ leadership is in line with the transformational leadership and transactional leadership patterns in central Taiwan area.
2.The principals in smaller-sized schools are easier in line with the transformational and transactional leadership patterns.
3.The teachers’ involvement in creating the school atmosphere is fairly active.
4.The leadership and atmosphere in the schools are getting improved after carrying out the principal-selecting system.
5.Both principal’s leadership and school atmosphere are varying with the size, location of a school、 with the age or sex of teachers、 even with the sex of principals.
6.A principal’s leadership and the creating of school atmosphere are correlated positively.
Based on the results of the study,suggestions are offered for the elementary school principals,teachers and future research.
