The aim of this study is to probe into the experiences, difficulties and measures of career women who participate in classes of the National Open University. By the suggestions and conclusions of this research, we anticipate offering some studying references to those adult-related educational institutes,multiple career women and the follow-up graduate students.
Based on different characters of people, this research is carried out by interviewing eight multiple roles career women students studying in the Chiai Study Center of National Open University. Their learning experiences are diversified. Their learning difficulties can be classified into individual reasons, family reasons and school reasons. The measures for dealing with difficulties can be classified into the priority of playing multiple roles, strategies of playing multiple roles and the external supports for multiple roles.
The conclusions are as follows:
1. The experiences of multiple roles career women in continuing learning are diversified.
2. The personal difficulties of multiple roles career women in learning in the National Open University include being not familiar with school regulations, bad memory, unfit condition, over self-demanding and feeling stressed.
3. The family difficulties include having not enough time to being with their families, feeling uneasy, children’s health and family support.
4. The school difficulties include facing opening homework and exams.
5. There is little conflict between the work and the learning in the Open University.
6. While playing multiple roles, family is still the priority for them, especially kids. The continuing learning is the second choice.
7. The strategies for keeping on learning include time management, exercises, recreation, travel, class switch, desire decrease, neglect and communicating with husbands.
8. Family, spouse, classmates, colleagues, friends and clubs are the external supports for them to go on learning.
Based on the aim and conclusion of this study, we proposed suggestions as below.
1. Suggestions for the adult-related educational institutes:
(1) Establish “Adult Learning Service Centre”.
(2) Beginning guidance.
(3) Opening homework and reports announced in advance.
(4) Flexible exam date.
(5) Recruiting good instructors to plan curriculums.
(6) Providing supports and rewards to every club activity.
2. Suggestions for multiple roles career women in contiuning learning.
(1) Have heart and concept of life learning.
(2) Feel easy to accept physical and mental changes and learn to self-adjust.
(3) Learn to accept imperfection.
(4) Learn to plan the goal and time management.
(5) Care about exercises, recreational activities and health of your families.
(6) Seek for assistance from the society supporting system.
(7) Reinforce abilities of foreign languages and information collecting.
(8) Compose a “Student mutual help group”, and ask help to teachers and classmates.
3. Suggestions for the follow-up researches.
(1) It’s better to take quantification into your research to extend the explaining range of the research.
(2) Extend the researching range to different Study Centers of the National Open University, including different cities or towns such as Taipei City, Kaohsiung, or different people like the married but no kid career women, household women, unmarried career ladies or even male or couples who are learning together.
