One of the advantages of the tape drive system is high volumetric recording density, which is obtained by high area recording density and thin tape. The area recording density can be increased by introducing high performance tape, which superior magnetic characteristics and smooth magnetic surface. However, a smooth surface often produces a higher friction coefficient, which could cause tape damage by heads and unstable tape running in the tape drive. The one-dimensional (1D) steady-state compressible Reynolds equation and tape deformations equation is analyzed using the finite-difference method. Numerical results for the head/tape spacing, the air-bearing pressure and the contact pressure are obtained for linear head/tape interface and rotary head/tape interface. The empirical relation and elliptic elastic-plastic microcontact model were incorporated into an existing numerical simulation of the head/tape interface resulting in a model, where the tape can be partially supported by air-bearing pressure and partially supported by head/tape contact pressure. In this paper, the numerical simulation results for the head/tape spacing, the air-bearing pressure and the contact pressure are obtained and compared with other author’s results.
