Therefore, the goals of data storage technology target on the issues of how to provide higher efficiency, higher capacity, higher scalability, and easier management. At the same time, the technological advances in signal processing at the physical interface layer have allowed the rapid evolution of Ethernet performance from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps, and now to 10 Gbps. The performance of gigabit Ethernet is higher enough to support the transport requirement of the storage system. The iSCSI is a one of new protocols for Ethernet-based IP storage system. Based on the Small compute System Interface (SCSI), iSCSI enables host computer systems to perform block data input/output (I/O) operations over TCP/IP networks. The thesis is major on the design of Internet-based ATA IDE interface (iIDE). A customized TCP/IP protocol module is designed and verified via an embedded network system. With coprocessor-based protocol offload, we developed an iIDE interface card which embeds 100 Mbps Ethernet interface and uses ARM CPU cooperated with Xilinx FPGA to offload the TCP/IP protocol and IDE interface from host.
