In combination of modern media and technical sound/light effects, today’s museums satisfy their visitors in the plural society with splendid architectures in the outside and creative exhibit methodologies within. Nonetheless, museums also imply a connotation of antique storehouse, national pride, or a minority culture that exist only for the elite class.
In natural science museums, 19-century American capitalism fine art museums, and local/ community/eco-museums, the viewers’ attitudes, social contexts, and political ideologies have all influenced the results of artifacts collection and presentation.
This thesis tries to use Jean Baudrillard’s theory of objects to analyze museums, objects, and its subjectivity. Representative museums and movements are selected and uncovered within the context of the ideology of museums and display of objects. The author discusses these topics from the perspectives of the four logics of Baudrillard’s system of objects-- the functional logic of use value, the economic logic of exchange value, the logic of sign value, and the logic of symbolic exchange, and presents an dialectic conclusion in the end.
