Abstract
The issue of museum study guides has gain more and more emphasis recently, however, analysis of study guides or surveys of user behaviors are still scarcely seen. This paper tries to investigate the planning procedure, content design, and usage of study guides in Taiwan fine art museums by means of phenomena research, which includes both the analysis of the content design and the survey of user behavior. The former part examines related literature and practical cases to study the elements and structures of study guides, and the latter part takes the study guide of “The spring of Prague─new art of Mucha”exhibittion in Kaohsiung fine art museum as example, employ interview, observation and questionnaire to interpret visitors’ reactions, behaviors, and opinions to study guides.
The finding of the study shows that: most of the themes of Taiwan fine art museums’ study guides are made enormous yet incoherent because of the absence of“less is more”design concept; different versions of study guides are categorized largely in terms of age instead of characteristics of visitor’s partnership; contents are arranged in separate structures that lack obvious grades of distinctions. The result of the case study reveals that while visitors express satisfactory experience in using study guides, their reactions do not meet designers’ expectations. In addition, the study also proves that the content design, position of placement, circumstances of usage, partnership, and feedback mechanism all affect the practice of study guides.
In conclusion, this thesis offers some suggestions from six aspects, which are: 1. planning of study guides; 2. content design; 3.compromise with reality; 4.position of placement; 5.related equipment; 6.propaganda. It is the author’s wish that this study will benefit study guide designers in art museums.
