The author first proposed a model of IT integrated instruction by taking a “world geographical environment” unit in 6th grade social studies curriculum as a practice example. Two different teaching models (with/without the IT-integrated curriculum) were used then in two groups (118 students) of 6th grade students chosen from K school in Chung-Cheng District of Taipei city. After 8 weeks experiment, the study compared the control group with experiment group in terms of students’ achievements in both computer and social studies academic performance. Quantitative and qualitative data were both collected via periodical tests, questionnaires, teachers’ interviews and classroom observations. The result indicated that the IT integrated instruction can make an immediate and significant improvement (4-week effect) in student’s learning achievements in social studies, especially in the psychomotor domain, but has no significant influence on learning retention (8-week effect). The IT integrated model also significantly improved students’ achievement in computer skills. Through qualitative data, furthermore the study found that the IT integrated model can generate more classroom interactions among students in experiment group than control group. Students in experiment group showed positive attitudes towards the IT integrated model. In the end, concrete suggestions were made for researchers and practitioners.
