Nokia’s R&D and Finnish Electronics Industry: A Viewpoint of National System of Innovation

碩士 === 淡江大學 === 歐洲研究所 === 91 === According to the concept of national system of innovation and the theory of industrial networks, the aim of this thesis is to investigate the contribution of Nokia’s R&D to the growth of Finnish electronics industry. This thesis discusses the contribution of Finnish innovation system to Nokia’s R&D firstly. From the ETX technology programme, it is noted that Finnish government promotes the cooperation among firms, research institutes and universities. Besides, Nokia plays a crucial role both in ETX technology programme or Finnish innovation system. Although only 37 of 124 firms of Finnish electronics industry participate in ETX programme, it can be learned that Finnish government mainly proposes to upgrade the capability of technology of ICT cluster. In addition, by collecting 159 firms’ information of Finnish electronics industry, we discover that most of firms are responsible for the production of industrial electronics and telecommunications related equipment. Firms providing EMS play a key role of managing a large amount of suppliers for Nokia. Thus, Nokia’s suppliers form an industrial network in cooperation with Nokia’s R&D. Due to focus on downstream innovation and without its owned semiconductor factories, Nokia outsources its manufacture and R&D to suppliers, causing the effect of externalities and the promotion of industrial technologies. By the interaction between Nokia and its suppliers, Nokia’s R&D leads to the growth of Finnish electronics industry. The conclusion of this thesis is briefly described as following: 1.Nokia, its suppliers, research institutes, and universities closely cooperate with each other within Finnish innovation system. 2.The source of growth of Finnish electronics industry is the production of telecommunications equipment and components, leading to the networking. 3.Firms providing EMS play a crucial role in the Finnish electronics industry 4.Thanks to focus on customers’ needs and close cooperation with firms providing EMS, Nokia’s growth causes the growth of electronics industry.
