Our target system is to create large display parallel rendering system built by PC cluster. Our approach is more inexpensive and flexible, yet still delivers high-performance visual effect as the high-end workstations. Different from the memory-shared mechanism that was traditionally used to build the CAVE like system, we develop a frame synchronization algorithm, which is based on the sequence of parallel computations, for a cluster of parallel rendering PCs to avoid tearing effect. In the end of the paper, we implemented the proposed frame synchronization algorithm in both hardware and software approaches to discuss if a special hardware is needed for PC cluster based parallel ren-dering system. Our experiment shows that the hardware approach can achieve more accurate frame synchronize effect but the software approach provide better flexibility in building such a system.
