Summary:碩士 === 淡江大學 === 建築學系 === 91 === A Study of Farmhouse Preference from Local People in I-Lan Region Abstract Due to the rapid social and economic development since the 1960’, farmhouses in I-Lan region have transformed from supporting the basic practical functional needs to additional emphasis on decorative expressions; and nowadays I-Lan people mostly see the building of their houses as holistic life planning. The promotion of I-Lan House projects sponsored by the local government in 1994 had great influence on people’s ideas of residential design. Hence, there appears to be a myth of I-Lan houses as better designed homes judged by the architecture professionals. However, the new farmhouses in I-Lan region seem to bear deeper meanings than merely designer brand names. It is worthwhile to look into the perception on preference and the ideas of house building from the local lay people’s point of view. This thesis utilizes theories in the field of Environment-Behavior Study focusing on 21 farmhouses in I-Lan region including 4 I-Lan houses. It is intended to discover the ideals and concepts and social concerns determining the building of farmhouses from people in I-Lan region. Methods involve photographing the selected farmhouses, and structured interviews of 11 informants who have lived in the region for five years or more. Each informant was asked to rank their reference, and described their likes as well as dislikes regarding the building forms, construction, and exterior decorations. The content of each interview was made into transcriptions as the basis for analysis. For I-Lan people, house building is not only a reflection of daily lives but also a process involving life planning and personal values. These include: (1)﹒The extension of personal fengshui believes to social relationships. (2)﹒The relationship between nature and the house environment involves mixed judgements regarding nature as healthy, following the heaven’s flow, but also as potential threats and disaster which cannot be predicted or controlled. (3)﹒Expressions of family economic power. (4)﹒Through copying styles and decors from Western World and modern cities one can fulfill the desire of reaching out with the modern world; applying foreign images symbolizes progressive lifestyle and wealth. (5) ﹒The ultimate meaning of house building is to make oneself in the world, and find the identity in the community. It is concluded that I-Lan houses should not be a designer brand name, but seen as people in I-Lan region making harmonic executions among the self, society and nature. I-Lan farmhouses are the expressions of a group of people living the same environment sharing the social and cultural values, hence, expressions of regional identity.
