This thesis aims at exploring the prospects of civil society in Russia in connection with the formation and decline of Russia’s traditional civilization and the legacy of Russian intelligentsia. This study, therefore, can contribute to the better understanding of the differences between various cultural traditions and the meaning of the public sphere and civil society in the global perspective.
The thesis deals with the following main issues:
a) The concept of public sphere in modern Western thought and its evolution in the Western political theory
b) The legacy of Russia’s traditional thought and its on Russia’s political culture in the light of modern concept of public sphere
c) Main sections of civil society and the nature of civil society in different countries of the world with the special attention to the situation in Russia
The modern problems related to the civil society are treated in the context of discussions on this issue in contemporary Russia. The social function of the media, the condition of the non-governmental organizations, trade unions and other civil institutions are investigated in detail.
