The CIMS of the external source ITMS investigated by our group have demonstrated the features including excellent MS/MS capability, unusual adduct ions observed in the NCI and CAD and hydration phenomenon observed in the CAD processes. In this thesis, we applied the CI method to report an interesting phenomenon. That is, the novel observation of the doublet peaks in the total ion chromatogram (TIC) under DME chemical ionization, using a temperature controlled direct insertion probe (DIP) while introducing the sample into the external source ITMS. Possible factors that may affect the TIC splitting including the types of compounds, the types of the CI reagent gases, the reactivity of the CI reagent gas, the pressures of the CI reagent gases were investigated.
