It’s necessary to build the additional reservoirs to expand the water resource. The earthquakes in Chi-Chi and Chiayi have caused various levels of damage to the local concrete and the earth dams. Fortunately, there were no serious failures to the local earth dams due to the last two earthquakes. The earth dams could be damaged and not withstand the next larger earthquake. In this research, the results of geotechnical engineering centrifuge model testing and the finite element numerical analysis method are used to predict the safety of earth dam and the probability of failure due to shaking. First we collect the data results of the centrifuge dam model and soil testing from VELACS project in U.S.A.. We then analyze the same earth dam in VELACS project by using effective stress analysis code DIANA-SWANDYNEⅡof the finite element method. Finally, after comparing the numerical analysis with the centrifuge testing results, we can appreciate the ability of this DIANA-SWANDYNEⅡprogram for analyzing the safety of an earth dam during earthquake shaking conditions. This will be the research base for the Ren-Yi-Tan dam project. Comparing the displacement response to the pore water pressure, the latter more sensitive to an earthquake. The dam supervisor could take prompt and early action if the pore water pressure builds up to a certain value. The pore water pressure could therefore be regarded as the significant signal in the safety evaluation of earth dams. The DIANA-SWANDYNEⅡ program is therefore quite good in simulating the displacement and the pore water pressure. Shong-Loong Chen 陳水龍 2003 學位論文 ; thesis 155 zh-TW
