There are three kinds of thin films that include tantalum, tantalum-nitride, and tantalum-dioxide. We analyze some properties for three kinds of thin films by XRD, SEM/EDS, vickers hardness tester and α-step…etc, after settling sputtering parameters. Then, in vitro tests of human umbilical vein endothelial cells ( HUVEC ) culture ( high or low density) were on these thin films 316L stainless steel and coverslip. 48 hours later, we analyze growing condition, amount of cells and to observe the performance of Cx43 ( Connexin43 ) and vWF ( von Willebrand Factor ) by using confocal laser scanning microscope ( confocal laser scanning microscope,CLSM ) match with immunocyto- chemistry. We also observed the surface of cells by scanning electron microscope ( scanning electron microscope,SEM ). In the high density, these three kinds of thin films that cell densities are very closely. Their cell densities are about 1253 cells / mm2, 1118 cells / mm2, and 1098 cells / mm2, respectively. There are no meanings of statistics obviously ( P>0.05 ). Moreover, 316L stainless steel ’s ( no sputtering thin film ) cell density is about 858 cells / mm2 and control ( glass ) is about 903 cells / mm2, their cell densities are very closely. The statistics of all tantalum-based thin films are more than control ( P<0.02 ), so we realize that tantalum-based thin films have better biocompatibility than 316L stainless steel. Besides, the cell density showed reduction after annealing. In the low density, these three kinds of thin films that cell densities are very closely. Their cell densities are about 559 cells / mm2, 568 cells / mm2, and 558 cells / mm2, respectively. There are no meanings of statistics obviously ( P>0.05 ). Moreover, the statistics of all tantalum-based thin films are more than 316L stainless steel ( P<0.001 ), so we realize that tantalum-based thin films have better biocompatibility than 316L stainless steel. In the results that connexin43 were observed, control is the best among the three. Both 316L stainless steel and tantalum are in the next place, but then tantalum-nitride and tantalum-dioxide are the worst. From this response, control still has better communication which between cell and cell. There are analogy between connexin43 and vWF, control is the best and is no different to others. By all accounts, there are no different to each other. Besides, the amount of connexin43 and vWF showed increase after annealing. The conclusion of this research was sputtering tantalum-based thin films on 316L stainless steel that transform the endothelial cell density, the performance of Cx43 and vWF.
