Complete Works on Residence said：”The mountains govern population or family member numbers ,while water governs fortune.” resulting in a concept that water is fortune” .This concept, striking root in the hearts of the people, was and is still very popular in mainland China and Taiwan.
The content of I-Ching,i.e. The Book of Changes consist of four parts - Trigrams, phraseology, Commentaries, and Diagrams. And the “Diagrams” include Innate Eight Trigrams &Acquired Eight Trigrams, Hou- Twu and Luo –Map. Yin and Yang (Dual), Chih. Time and Space ,etc .It is the “Diagrams” that the theories of residence construction are based on.
The theories of Feng –Shui are composed of two major systems：The Method of Luan-Tou and the Method of Li-Chih.1. The Method of Luan-Tou：to determine whether the site will bring good or evil fortune by studying the external environment of the Mountains, Place, Hills, and Water (lucky combination site on a hill where the geomantic influences are assembled ) and its earth and water to see if they have collected good "Chih" from the heaven and the earth.2. The Method of Li-Chih：to determine whether the site will bring good or evil fortune, disaster or happiness by studying the external or internal appearance and situation, location and the coordination with time and space ,based on the Innate Eight Trigrams & Acquired Eight Trigrams. Hou- Twu and Luo –Map. Yin and Yang (Dual). and The five primary elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth ) of the theory of I-Ching. When studying the Residence, it is recommended to use both the methods; However, the frame work of this article is focused on the Method of Li-Chih by Water ,and also considers water on Luan-Tou, which is related to my main topic.
Almost all the works relating to Feng- Shui published in the country are academic essays. No known researches have ever been made on the theories of Water Method. Nevertheless，the good performance of the practical operation depends on the solid foundation of the theory. thus ,this article will be devoted to studying the theories on the San-Yuan, the Method of San-Hou by Water, San-Yuan Time Circle and Space ,and about the Method of the form by Water with AI-Shing and the relevant parts in the Method of Luan-Tou which are dedicated to the external “water ” of the residence. Then the article will sum up the do’s and taboo’s of the practice of Water Method for residence with cases as demonstration, with a view to providing the results to architects, investors and users for reference.
