D. 2003/6/30 Effect of the shuttlecock, a traditional Chinese physical activity, on motor abilities is still unknown. This study was conducted to investigate health-promoting effect of a 12-wk shuttlecock kicking training (SCT) in young adults. Fourteen males and 13 females aged 18.9±0.8 (mean±SD) and 19.4±1.5 years, respectively, participated the study voluntarily. All participators did not have SCT experience and were divided into exercise group (8 males, 7 females) and sedentary control group (6 males, 6 females) according to their wishes. The SCT program in the exercise day was set as following: 10-min SCT, 5-min break, 10-min SCT, 5-min break, 10-min SCT, and the exercise group did SCT in any 3 day of a week for 12 weeks. The motor ability tests including hexagon test (agility), close eye single foot stand test (balance), 20 second choose test (coordination), legs press (muscular endurance), range of motion of hip joint (flexibility) and whole body reaction measurement (the reaction time) of all participators were done by all participators at the 0th, 7th and 13th wk of the SCT program. The results showed that all motor abilities were significantly improved on the 13th wk (paired t-test, p< 0.05). Besides, all participants’ shuttlecock kicking skills improvements were significant (p< 0.05). A significant correlation was found between the shuttlecock kicking skill and hexagon test score (r=0.61, p< .05) at the 13th wk. Therefore, single-leg-standing shuttlecock kicking not only is an exercise, that can promotes motor abilities and health related physical fitness of young adults.
